Midpoints
Planetary Pictures

Astrology is a field of study more than ten thousand years old.  Early man had to learn the cosmic rhythm, the changing of the seasons for food gathering was crucial for survival.

The oldest representation of the zodiac is located at a Temple in Dendera, in Egypt. It dates back to approximately 332 BC the period of the conquest of Egypt by "Alexander the Great".

The interpretation of the constellations for an individual dates back to Assyrian and Babylonian times.  Astrological prophecies were only made available to the King. These prophecies were mainly targeting weather cycles to insure a good harvest, so the King or Monarch could feed his people.   There were also prognostications on who would be the winner of a military battle, or which day would be more advantageous to launch a military strike.

If we compare our modern method of government to the astrologer of the past we see that he was an important counsel, such as the Chief of Staff's relationship with our President today.  In the middle ages a horoscope was cast no longer just for Monarchs but for other important and influential men of the time. Bishops, Popes, Ministers, and wealthy merchants sought the counsel of an astrologer.  Ancient astrology recognized that when two energies merged an event was likely to occur. Whitte, a German Astrologer did extensive study on midpoints and the planetary pictures that they paint. His student, Reinhold Ebertin expounded upon his work, thus we have a wonderful canvas to paint our planetary pictures.

You might ask, "This may all be very interesting to, say, a student of astrology, but how does it relate to me?"

Well, it happens to be one of the easiest ways to see a future event in your chart.  When a transiting planet triggers a midpoint between two planets in your natal chart all three energies merge and something is happening, or has a good possibility of happening. What the event is depends on the energies of the planets involved.  Where this hits in your chart tells you what area of your life is being affected as well as the natal positions held by the planets involved.  Your natal ascendant and mid-heaven are also big players in a midpoint triangle, because this is how the world sees you. These are very personal points in your chart.

In Christopher Reeves chart, for instance, you see how a triggered midpoint changed his life forever.  After his riding accident he had surgery to fuse two vertebrae on June 5th 1995.  The midpoint between his mid heaven (career, how the world sees you) and the planet Uranus (abrupt change) is 14 degrees of Gemini and 19 minutes.  Transiting Sun was at 14 degrees Gemini and 22 minutes.  His career changed that day.  He went from a leading man to a leader in awareness for stem cell research and paralysis.

The north node in your chart is your path -- it's what you need to do.  The north node is also a significant player in this ménage a trois of energies when it's involved in a planetary picture.  The midpoints are at a certain degree and sign in your chart.  When a transiting planet or the sun hits this midpoint (you can see the date in an ephemeris) something is happening on some level, and
sometimes it's very dramatic.

Sun / Moon = Mercury
(midpoint between sun and moon hit by transiting Mercury) Your attitude and thoughts concerning relationships such as marriage and partnership are being effected.
Mars / Uranus = Pluto
Force of power or violent intent.
Sun / Venus = Pluto
Strong excitement in a love union.
Mars / Neptune = Venus
Misdirected passion.
Danger of infection from sexually transmitted disease.
Sun / Venus = Saturn
Restriction in a love relationship or separation.
Being lovesick.  Or difficulty in precision art.
Mars / Neptune = Uranus
Cruelty, violence, brutality or disaster.
Sun / Venus = Jupiter
Happiness in love.
Jupiter / Uranus = Venus
Change in love life, or just happy feeling in love. Sudden engagement.
Sun / North Node = Mars
Desire to be important, to have recognition.
To establish oneself.  Teamwork.
Venus / Pluto = Mars
Possible rape or a brutal coarse expression of feeling.  A strong sensual nature.
Mars / Uranus = Saturn
Violence, destruction, or an operation.
Saturn / Neptune = Moon
Depression, pessimism or the inability to mature emotionally.

When planets party together something is happening.
It's quite amazing to plot it on your calendar and watch what transpires.
Wishing you all "Stellar" planetary pictures.  I hope you get an Oscar.
